Other Modus Operandi on Agency and Representation
In the NFL, an agent can represent multiple players and approach multiple NFL teams in attempts to secure the best contract and playing options for each client, based on that client's criteria or instructions for the agent. The NFL Player's Association and the league office requires prospective agents to first pass a certification test to ensure that qualified agents are knowledgeable and capable in a multi-million dollar business and also a line of work that can pose serious health risks.
Thus, "Bob the Agent" might represent "John the Kicker" and "Jim the Wide Receiver," where John wants the most money, but Jim wants to go to a playoff team. Because the NFL has 32 teams (and will likely expand to incorporate other cities into the fold), these players (and others that "Bob the Agent" represents) - if they meet performance standards - should have multiple options, and these options should not conflict with those of the other players that "Bob the Agent" represents.
Crisp, clean, typically no conflict of interest in this regard.
But, oh . . . not boxing.
In boxing, the big time promoters (i.e., Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank, etc.) are the most visible and the most positioned within the close-circle industry. Either you're inside, or you're outside.
Commanding the high fees as premium for the uncommon access, these promoters will represent many of the popular fighters, and typically from each weight division.
Systemic Promotional Flaw
Therein lies boxing's systemic promotional flaw, as multiple fighters from each weight division are represented by a single promotional agent. Make no mistake about it - the boxer is the client. The promoter is the representative or the agent. The boxer is (technically) the boss.
Serving Too Many Masters
When you have multiple fighters roughly around the same weight division, and they all want to fight the same guy, and all of them are represented by the same promoter, that is a prime circumstance for one slave (the promoter) serving too many masters.
1. Juan Manuel Marquez wants (or wanted) a third bout with Manny Pacquiao. (Did not happen so far in 2009.)
2. No, the chief honcho and the Golden Boy himself - Oscar de la Hoya - stepped in front of the line and fought Pacquiao in December 2008.
3. Ricky Hatton wanted Pacquiao and got to fight the Filipino phenom in May 2009. ("Be careful what you wish for.")
4. Floyd Mayweather (with ties to Golden Boy Promotions) may also want Pacquiao in the fall of 2009 or early 2010. He is the favored candidate to fight Pacquiao - given the enormity of the event. Boxing is not just a contest, it - depending on the nature and predilections of the participants - is also a business. It's not just the "sport of boxing" but also the "business of boxing."
5. Shane Mosley? Well . . . let's say he's had to be a quasi-independent self-promoter lately, which I believe has placed pressure on Golden Boy to procure the goods for its client.
De la Hoya cut in front of the line ahead of Mosley. He is the boss at Golden Boy. Then Hatton again cut in front of the line ahead of Mosley. He is part of Golden Boy. Then Marquez or Mayweather may likely cut in front of the line ahead of Mosley. Marquez is part of Golden Boy, the problem is, Marquez has already had two "dates" with the PacMan. Mosley has been passed over several times in potential clashes with Pacquiao, and he is also part of Golden Boy.

To have a respectable academic background like this author--I would say that his article is a product of experience and an excellent academic upbringing thus coming up with intelligent pieces and this is the kind of reading that I would surely love to discuss at www.pacfans-corner.com
if i were manny, would rather to choose floyd jr. then a third fight against jmm then retire as a champ and a p4p king in boxing. mann need not to prove anything else because he has proven everything...
again let's discuss things at www.pacfans-corner.com not on stinking pacland.

Calling all truly Pacquiao fanatics:
I encourage everybody to save up P550.00 now until the proposed Oct.17 Pacquiao bout. Let's all watch it LIVE at the cinemas.By 12:00NN,you already know who the winner is,unlike in GMA7 by 3:00PM. I guarantee it's one hell of an experience.Just bring foods and drinks.I despised the humungous commercial inserts on TV every Pacquiao bout. It's just upsetting and we,the fans, are at the losing end of this, even losing patience. And lastly, just cover your ears for the deafening cheers of our kababayans. Let's all experience it with Pacman's last two mega-fights.Mabuhay tayong lahat!!!
My guess is that Manny will retire until he gets 35 more or less. Just a month ago he invested a lot of money..it might be in lump sum or installment. Plus he is planning to run in politics and a lot more projects. Their's no way he will have enough with two more megas. I figure out every year at the average of three fights with the average of 25M per fight..is 5 x 3 is 15 times 25 is 350M more or less.. plus his previous investments is more or less 400M DOLLARS until he retires.
SHANE MOSLEY WOULD DESTROY PACQUIAO. THAT'S WHY MANNY DIDN'T WANT TO FIGHT HIM. MANNY IS A PUSSY.
HAHAH to BLACKY'S comment! hahahah why would Manny even waste his energy on Shane??? he's weathered! HAHAHAH. I swear most of the time people don't even know what they're talking about. Sheesh...where you been for the past couple of years? haha
I am a die hard Pacman fan, and if there is one boxer who has a real good chance at defeating him, it is Shane Mosley, and I believe this will happen this year. Forget the Floyd Mayweather's aspirations of off ring glory. He has already done himself out of the fight, anything from him will just be posturing. Mosley will be Manny's last fight then he will retire.
