'Mortal Kombat X' trailer release: Teases much, reveals little

Good question.
Good question.

Warning!: Spoilers for Mortal Kombat (2011) ahead!

NetherRealm Studios has officially released the announcement and first trailer for Mortal Kombat X, the next game in the legendary Mortal Kombat game series. The trailer was announced on the official NetherRealms twitter page at 11 AM on June 2, 2014, and linked to the new website.

The trailer features the newly updated looks of Sub Zero and Scorpion, looking grittier than ever and no less brutal in their fighting style. The fight seems to follow the style of a Mortal Kombat game, but is clearly a pre-rendered fight since the camera angles shift to showcase the action a bit better. "X-rays" of broken bones that were featured in the last game were seen as well as some terrain use. While these pre-rendered movies give no definitive views of gameplay, they imply a lot of what was seen in previous games will be seen again.

The trailer fuels a lot of speculation while answering very few questions raised. Is this game a sequel to the 2011 Mortal Kombat game? The last Mortal Kombat game's story mode saw the deaths of many characters (including main character Liu Kang) which makes fans wonder whether we will see many of those characters again. Of course, death did not appear to stop Sub Zero, who died 2-3 different ways last game.

Fighting games have historically lead to speculation as their rosters are slowly filled in. You can expect that fans will be debating which characters will be returning, and which characters may guest star in the game like Freddy Kruegar did last game. Clearly the company is hoping that will bring a lot of buzz for the game, as the trailer itself asks "Who's Next?"
