In 2010, director Kevin Tancharoen debuted a dark and gritty short film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. Gone was the techno music and video game look. This was Mortal Kombat like nothing you had seen. Pushing the limits to a rated R style film, with amazing fights, and making the characters more realistic made this a web sensation. The rumors started to fly that this was a preview of the upcoming new film, but in reality it was a film no one knew was being made as a pitch from Tancharoen to the studio for his idea of a new re-imagined film. Sadly, the studio refused to back a new film, but did give the go ahead for a 10 part web series featuring all the same talent called Mortal Kombat: Legacy.
The series went back to before the original game to tell the story of each character and how they came to be in the tournament. Featuring the same gritty look and fighting that made Rebirth so great, but with a bit more story has made this an enjoyable series. Season two continues the saga as Liu Kang and Ermac join the those introduced in the first season including Kenshi, Kung Lao, Kuai Lang, Stryker, Kitana, Mileena, Johnny Cage, Scorpion and Sub- Zero. As Raiden and his recruits clash against the dark forces of Outworld it begins to uncover the rivalries and histories of these warriors. In addition this season will dig into the complex relationship of Liu Kang and Kung Lao as well as revisit the complicated family dynamic of Kitana and Mileena.
Each episode continues to feel like a mini-film sucking you in and ready for more. This is a must see series for martial artists, MK fans, and movie fans alike. With each episode it seems to get better and better, with a clear passion for this project with all involved.
