Morrissey hospitalized with infection

Joining the throngs of Americans with the flu, British rock singer Morrissey today has been hospitalized in metro Detroit with a suspected bladder infection, causing him to further complicate his U.S. concert tour. This adds to the already canceled show from Thursday night and the postponed show Friday night, both due to an illness in the band.

Reuters reports that the 53 year-old former lead singer for the 1980s alternative rock band The Smiths, checked into a Beaumont Hospital on Friday in the suburb of Royal Oak, Michigan.

Morrissey, whose hits include "First of the Gang to Die" and "Irish Blood, English Heart," toured North America last fall, played some shows in Australia and New Zealand in December and came back to perform in the United States earlier this month.

Morrissey had to cut his North American tour short last year due to his mother’s health. In November he added 32 more stops in North America starting in New York.

Others in the news recently due to illnesses have been actor Burt Reynolds who was hospitalized in intensive care due to the flu, and Barry Manilow who was forced to cancel several shows and postpone his highly anticipated opening of “Manilow on Broadway.”

It is unknown if Morrissey is still in the hospital or if he’s already been released.
