Morrison wins World Cup race in Netherlands

According to the Canadian Press, Denny Morrison of Chetwynd, British Columbia won a gold medal Friday at a men's 1000m speed skating world cup race in Heerenveen, Netherlands.

Morrison, who won a silver medal in the men's 1000m speed skating event and a bronze medal in the men's 1500m speed skating event at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, posted a winning time of 1:08.91.

American speed skating star Shani Davis won the silver medal with a time of 1:09.13, with Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands winning the bronze medal with a time of 1:09.25.

With the world cup win, Morrison finished in second place in the world cup standings with 344 points. Davis finished first with 590 points.

Morrison is also a past Olympic gold medalist, having been part of the men's team pursuit that captured first place with Mathieu Giroux of Montreal, Quebec and Lucas Makowsky of Regina, Saskatchewan at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
