Morgan Park crowned in Peoria Saturday

Saturday saw the consolation and title games in Class 3A and 4A hotly contested at Peoria in the 2013 IHSA boys basketball state tournaments. It was time for all the teams to put any opening day jitters behind them and go play for some hardware.

The 3A title game between Cahokia and Morgan Park had everyone wondering if Cahokia could cook up a scheme to slow down the Mustangs. Both teams seemed to be on their game as a fast paced and evenly played opening quarter unfolded until Morgan Park edged out to a 17-9 lead after one. The Mustangs began to control things on the inside as well as the perimeter to open a double digit lead. Cahokia, though, showed they weren't going anywhere by draining some late 3's to close it to 29-24 at the intermission. Through sheer grit and determination, the Commanches were able to hang in there for much of the third quarter, but Morgan Park slowly began to take complete control. The Mustangs took home the title by the score of 63-48.

Morgan Park is to be congratulated for one of the more impressive post season runs in history. They displayed discipline, incredible pressure defense, high powered offense and the ability to control the boards. They were never threatened in this tournament. In addition, they played three of the four Class 4A finalists during the regular season and beat them all.

Orr got their running game going and Limestone found their shooting eye to provide an entertaining Class 3A consolation game. The Rockets led at half, 30-22, and were able to maintain the edge in the second to win by a final of 58-49 and take home the third place trophy.
