Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente continue to struggle drawing 1-1 with Coras Tepic FC at the Caliente Stadium in their 4th game of the Copa MX of the Apertura 2014. The play that could have made the difference in the game was a missed penalty shot from veteran player Alfredo Moreno.

Coras began the game with five-man defense that at times had up to six players defending against Moreno and Dario Benedetto. The Ascenso MX team took a defensive position and patiently waited for a counterstrike opportunity.

Xolos could not penetrate the visiting team’s defense. Benedetto had the best chances in the first half but could not reach the passes on time to make a difference. The Argentine was close but it was not his night to pierce the net.

Juan Arango also had several shots with no luck. Cesar Farias sent Richard Ruiz to the field in the 65th minute. He did not disappoint. He took the ball from the Xolos side of the field and into the Coras area. He began a triangulation that began with Benedetto who centered to Moreno who crossed to Arango. The Venezuelan jumped over a sliding defender to put the ball past goalkeeper Miguel Marin.

Ruiz made a difference once again two minutes later when he took the ball into the area and forced goalkeeper Marin to take him down. The referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Moreno took the shot, but Marin guessed the ball’s direction and kept the scoreboard from changing.

Tijuana gave up possession of the ball to a Coras team that decided to move lines forward to apply pressure. The Aztec dogs began to make errors in the area and in the 77th Jorge Mora took advantage of a rebound that goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo could not control to close the gap 1-1.

“We definitely wanted to win, but that is football,” Greg Garza, who played the entire game said. “We can’t win them all, but we have to think about the future.”

This has been a tough season for Tijuana. This is the second game they draw in the Copa MX leaving them in danger of not advancing to the next round.

“It’s confidence,” Garza added. “There was definitely an opportunity for the win. But we just didn’t take advantage of it.”

Tijuana will host Leones Negros in week 7 of La Liga MX on Friday. Their next Copa MX game is against Chivas de Guadalajara at the Omnilife Stadium on September 16, 2014.
