The Apertura 2013 Copa MX has its finalists. Monarcas Morelia will face Atlas FC in the final of the competition that was founded in 1907. The Guadalajara based squad, which is at the bottom of the league table, has won the title on two occasions. Morelia, team that is amongst the leaders of the Apertura 2013, has only reached the final, in its previous incarnation, on one occasion.
Monarcas traveled to Monterrey to face the three time CONCACAF Champion at the Tecnologico stadium. With no chance of winning the Apertura 2013 of La Liga MX, CF Monterrey had to take advantage of the competition to win silverware for the fourth year in a row in any competition. However, the “purepechas” came out with all their strength and defeated the Rayados 3-0.
Chilean Hector Mancilla scored a brace with Carlos Morales putting the third and final goal in the net to reach the final. The Monterrey fans were not happy with the result and towards the final the chants called for a return for previous coach Victor Manuel Vucetich.
Morelia played with intensity, as they have played all season in both tournaments. Once again the Monarchy scored three goals against their opponents, a number that has been constant for Morelia this season. Monarcas is a legitimate competitor for the title and is also aspiring to take the Apertura 2013 La Liga MX title.
Atlas reaches final
The Guadalajara based Atlas FC reached the Copa MX final after defeating Liga de Ascenso MX squad Alebrijes de Oaxaca. The victory did not come easy for the rojinegros who had to take the game all the way to a penalty shoot-out.
Alebrijes surprised the first division squad getting on the scoreboard first. Gustavo Ramirez broke the net in the 32nd minute at the Benito Juarez stadium. Flavio Santos closed the gap in the 46th for the final 1-1. All five Atlas players put the ball in the net during the shoot-out. Alebrijes’ Jose Miguel Medina missed his shot leaving his team out of the final.
The Oaxaca based team was the only Liga de Ascenso team to reach the semifinals. The final game is scheduled to take place on Nov. 6, 2013. No venue has been announced at this time.
