Now that one of the harshest winters in recent memory is at long last behind us, the trails of the greater Fredericksburg area beckon.
The Salamander Loop’s trailhead is located off of Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1), near Massaponax High School. This trail leads through a wetland area that provides opportunities to see and hear the region’s amphibians, such as the salamanders that are the trail’s namesake, and frogs. The Salamander Loop also hosts naturalist-guided hikes, beginning at 9:00 AM on the second Sunday of every month.
The Spotsylvania Greenways Initiative also provides links to additional, continuously updated information about the Rappahannock River Heritage Trail, and the various trails within the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Battlefields Parks.
