Haircolour tips from David’s Beautiful People professional, Linda Sweetman

Linda Sweetman is a nationally respected Hair Colourist at David’s Beautiful People Salon in North Bethesda, Maryland near Washington, DC. She helps set the pace and standard of the quality of work that David’s represents. As a respected motivator and role model for other hair designers, she mentors and is a team leader. Sweetman is a seasoned Senior Hairstylist with more than 35 years of experience. She has an extensive education with L'Oréal Professionelle, Goldwell and Glemby International and specializes in corrective haircolour services. Early in her career, Sweetman received haircolour training from Clairol, Roux and Redken. Also, she attended advanced hair colour training workshops at Aveda.

Sweetman’s haircutting and hairstyling strength is working with curly and fine hair. Sweetman believes in the natural approach and not overusing chemicals. Sweetman notes, “I am now exploring Chromastics Hair Color as I am very intrigued with their organic haircolor system. It’s a good compromise between heavy chemicals and a natural based haircolor as I am working with clients that are looking for a less chemical approach. ”

She likes natural hair colour and works to enhance your natural color. Superior natural grey coverage is a big part of her work. Most importantly, she enjoys creating natural looking reds, blondes and brunettes. Whether she adds highlights or lowlights to a base colour or weave colour, she always strives to make the hair look beautiful.

The Upcoming Trend For Grey Haircolour: Many hair designers and haircolourists do not accept the new trend emerging of women who want to glamorize their grey hair. Sweetman adds, “I am seeing a lot of women right now who are embracing their grey hair. I think this is an important new haircolour trend with baby boomers who are starting to retire. Most of them are living very active lifestyles. These women want to look great, yet they don’t want the commitment of a hair colour appointment every 3 weeks. I am also working with a lot of women to help them get away from the high maintenance haircolour and into a glamorous look that still enhances their haircolour, yet with less upkeep. Many of these women need glosses, glazes and Cellophanes to add sparkle and shine. Some are asking for darker and medium tones for a salt and pepper look to dimensionalize their grey hair color shades, rather than to go white. Some of the many celebrities already showcasing this hair fashion trend are Jamie Lee Curtis, Diane Keaton and Kathy Bates. They still look great, fresh and fashionable. While many more mature clients will add haircolour with highlight services, the trends for some of these women are with more natural looking monochromatic and multi-dimensional haircolour designs with soft, loose and beautiful hair. I find that the younger hair designers are afraid to embrace this trend, yet it is a wonderful new opportunity that we must recognize.”

The Chemistry Behind Great Haircolour: Sweetman offers a haircolour service to help your hair grow out a single process to embrace grey. “I only highlight the areas where the regrowth shows. Lighten the hair to as pale of a yellow as possible. Shampoo out the lightener and apply the toner.”
