On Wednesday, the NBA D-League handed down two new rules, according to the League website. With NBA training camps in full swing, the D-League decided to embrace its other functions. After all, said D-League pres. Dan Reed, the Developmental League is more than just a developmental league.
"In addition to developing 20 percent of current NBA players and numerous coaches and referees who are enjoying NBA success, we also function as the NBA’s 'Research and Development' department and, therefore, are continuously looking for ways to improve the sport of basketball," Reed said.
In the spirit of continued experiment with the game as it is played in America, the D-League has decided that overtime periods will be knocked down from five minutes to three minutes in length. Also, the D-League will adopt an international basketball rule that states it is okay to remove or touch the ball while it is in the rim. The NBA, and the D-League up until now, had that being prohibited.
These rules are changed in an effort to make the game more enjoyable for all involved.
"We believe implementing these new rules will make our games even more exciting for both players and fans alike, while providing a valuable service for the NBA." Mr. Reed continued.
This may make Red Claws games more exciting, but, initially, it will take some time for the players themselves to get used to them. Hopefully, once the thick cloud of technical fouls from angry people settles, the game will be more fun to watch.
