More motorcycle companies report increasing sales

The good economic news keeps coming. The latest motorcycle manufacturers to report good sales figures are Harley-Davidson and Ducati.

Harley today released its fourth quarter world-wide sales results for 2011, showing an increase of 10.9 percent over the previous year's fourth quarter and a 5.9 percent increase for 2011 as a whole.

Ducati earlier announced that its sales growth in North America reached 43 percent in 2011. These figures put North America into the top spot for Ducati sales for the first time ever.

For Harley the results represent not just an increase in numbers, but a shift from a money-losing quarter to one in which they made money. Last year in the fourth quarter The Motor Company lost $42.1 million, while this year they had income of $54.6 million. For the full year 2010 Harley made $259.7 million while in 2011 they doubled that, to $548.1 million.

Ducati attributes its success to the introduction of its very well received Diavel and the continued popularity of its Multistrada.

"Growth in the North American market is a top priority for Ducati. North America's outstanding performance significantly contributed to Ducati's global success in 2011, which has been a record year for us in terms of global sales, market share and profitability," said Cristiano Silei, Chief Executive Officer of Ducati North America.
