Subzero temperatures, coupled with warnings from media and officials, were not enough to prompt some Marion County, Ind., dog owners to bring their pets indoors and as a result, the frigid weather took a fatal toll, reported Thursday's WISHTV News.

WISHTV reported that on Wednesday, animal care and control officials stated that they would be pursuing criminal charges following the death of two dogs who literally froze to death after being left outside to endure the freezing conditions.

Officials in the area are unsure how many homeless dogs have frozen to death...after the dogs succumb to the elements, they are simply cleaned up by workers with the department of Public Works and taken away.

Dan Shackle, administrator for Indianapolis Animal Care & Control, told WISHTV:

You need to bring them in or we will confiscate them for their safety,

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for pets who have been left outdoors and those people are urged to contact the authorities to conduct welfare checks if the pets appear to be suffering without adequate shelter.

Earlier this week, a sheltie mix named "Peanut," was rescued in Dubois County, Ind., after deputies followed up on an anonymous tip that he was suffering outside. Peanut was found in a pen, frozen to the ground by feces. Today, the little dog is making a good recovery and he has many offers for adoption.

A dog in Longview, Texas, was not as fortunate. By the time that help arrived to the chained dog, his body was frozen solid and today, the owners are now facing criminal charges for the act of cruelty.
