The second part of the discussion of the mono remasters is now available in the newest "Fab Fourum" show, just put online at www.podarama.com/fab_fourum or through iTunes.
Mitch Axelrod, one of the four hosts of the show, says part one was "by far our most popular show to date! Who would have guessed?"
If you haven't heard "Fab Fourum" yet, we suggest you give it a listen. It's a free-wheeling discussion of various Beatle topics hosted by Mitch Axelrod, author of “Beatletoons”; Rob Leonard, host of WHPC’s “Beatlesongs” for over 17 years; Ken Michaels, host of several Beatles shows on WNYT, WDHA-FM, WBZO-FM and XM Satellite Radio; and Tony Traguardo, music lecturer and journalist and host of WCWP’s “BeatleTrax” and "4F" on Podarama.com and iTunes.
The shows are available free from the link above or through iTunes.

I just listened to several minutes of both Mono shows, and I just had to turn them off. I completely disagree with a lot of the points, assumptions, and opinions. To the point that it was getting me annoyed.
Anyone who listens to, say, the stereo version of "Slow Down," then listens to the mono version-- if they don't see immediately that the mono blows the stereo to pieces-- they have no ears for rock and roll. Ditto the crappy stereo mixes for "Day Tripper," "We Can Work It Out," "Paperback Writer," and most of RUBBER SOUL. In fact, RUBBER SOUL is an absolute revelation in mono. I can't listen to the stereo version of ANY of those songs-- with the exception of the great YELLOW SUBMARINE re-mixes. Now, THAT is where stereo might overtake a lot of the mono mixes...if they could just RE-mix most of the catalogue-- esp. from REVOLVER backward.
Mono KILLS stereo right up to PEPPER. From there, sometimes MONO is better, sometimes STEREO is better...and sometimes there's no difference.
the stereo "Slow Down" was absolutely ruined by the overly dominant G.Martin piano overdub! I can't believe Martin or any of the Fabs were present when that mix was made. It certainly crys out for remixing now. Through oopsing I have created a stereo version in which the piano is applicably in the background (as it is in the mono mix). But a new stereo mix is desperately needed.
Not to harp on this subject, but by and large, the stereo separation of their early work made the rockers in particular sound too thin and weak. When listening to these tracks in mono, you get a sense of power, energy and urgency in the sound that was sorely lacking in the stereo mixes.
I agree that stereo re-mixes might improve the sound over the current ones, but I'll still take mono, thank you. At least on the rockers. And, strangely enough, on the simpler ballads. A song like "Yesterday" just sounds better in mono for some reason. As does "I'll Follow The Sun," or "Blackbird," or "Julia," etc.
