DMARC reported yesterday that demand for items is high, and donations are needed to meet the increased demand. Red Barrels and other drop-off sites make donating to this group convenient. Also yesterday, Jean, Tax Specialist 3, at H and R Block in Newton, shared examples of how coupons could be used to make charitable donations in way for you to take an income tax deduction. She also writes,

Making non-cash charitable contributions to qualified organizations is a wonderful way to assist those organizations that are important to you. Utilizing your smart coupon shopping skills to build your own personal stockpile and to support your favorite charity can be a big win-win for all involved. This short discussion [yesterday’s article] regarding non cash charitable contributions is meant to be a quick overview of the process, not an in-depth tax strategy counseling. There are caveats regarding donations that are not discussed here, so please consult your tax professional, or IRS.gov Publication 526, Charitable Contributions, for more information.

Des Moines coupon shoppers can practice charitable giving by participating in events like Couponing for a good cause. Katie planned this event back in September. Tax receipts will be issued for the event, and donors can deduct as much as allowed by the law. Talking to an understanding and knowledgeable tax preparer like Jean can also be helpful.
