More cars stolen on New Years Day

Denver, you might want to pay extra attention tonight and tomorrow morning as you are out celebrating. The LA Times reports that more cars are stolen on New Years Day than any other day of the year. Car thieves are busy taking advantage of people during a time when they are celebrating, and paying little attention to their belongings.

There could be several reasons as to why more cars are stolen on this day. One, people tend to leave their cars in odd locations overnight and take cabs home after a night of drinking and partying. Two, people might forget to lock their doors, or leave keys in the ignition as they run into the liquor store.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reports that New Years Day tops the list of number of vehicles stolen in the U.S: 2,760. The report says New Year's is closely followed by Halloween (2,325 cars stolen) and Independence Day/Memorial Day, each with 2,207 vehicles reported stolen. The day with the least cars stolen? Christmas, only 1,336 were stolen. Maybe even car thieves get into the spirit of giving rather than taking.

NCIB has some recommendations for Denver New Years partiers:

  • Leave your car at home and take a cab home from the party.
  • If you do drive, park in a well lit, well traveled, secured area.
  • Lock your doors, roll up the windows and set the alarm.
  • Don’t leave gifts or valuables in plain sight where thieves can see them.
  • Consider a GPS-enabled device that can track your car, if it is stolen.
  • Another deterrent for car thieves is to use a club device that attaches to the steering wheel.

Well whatever you do, have a safe and Happy New Year Denver!
