More Bonnaroo 2010 lineup speculation from the fan sites

In a recent article, I brought you the most prevalent speculation about the Bonnaroo 2010 headliners from the various message boards dedicated to discussing the festival during the off-season. But headliners are only a small part of the Bonnaroo lineup yearly and, most hardcore fans will insist, not where the real heart of Bonnaroo lies. Instead, they will tell you that the real fun of Bonnaroo lies in seeing the smaller bands who perform before the headliners. Long time fans of Bonnaroo point to a number of very popular bands who played small stages at Bonnaroo before breaking into the mainstream. The most notable of these is My Morning Jacket who, in four years of playing Bonnaroo, has gone from early opener to epic late night performers to rumored 2010 headliners.

Fortunately for those seeking early rumors about the lineup for Bonnaroo 2010, there is no shortage of information and speculation about the smaller acts who might be playing Bonnaroo 2010. While it’s far too early for a consensus on anything, several bands have emerged as early Bonnaroo 2010 favorites, due to new albums, ongoing tours, or a history with the festival.

Here are some of the most talked about acts who you might get to see at Bonnaroo 2010:

Monsters of Folk
“Supergroup” isn’t a term you hear very often when discussing Bonnaroo lineups but Monsters of Folk are an exception. Every member of Monsters of Folk is a Bonnaroo veteran. Consisting of My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, singer/songwriter M. Ward, and Bright Eyes’ Conner Oberst and Mike Mogis, Monsters of Folk is a supergroup that seems tailor made for Bonnaroo. With their first album released in September 2009 and a tour ongoing, it seems almost a lock that we’ll see Monsters of Folk at Bonnaroo. Whether that is as a pre-headliner or a late night act remains to be seen.

She & Him
Another M. Ward group, She & Him was a persistent rumor for Bonnaroo 2009 before the “she” part of the group, actress Zooey Deschanel, had movie commitments that prevented the show from happening. The band is reportedly working on a sequel to their first album and a Bonnaroo show, either by themselves or as a segment of a lengthy Monsters of Folk late night show, seems like a good bet.

The Mountain Goats
Lo fi recording superstars The Mountain Goats seem perfectly fit for a Bonnaroo audience. Folksy style, highly intelligent lyrics, and captivating live shows all point to them doing very well on the farm. Indeed, The Mountain Goats quickly come up anytime a discussion about Bonnaroo wish lists starts on a fan board. With a new album released in October and one would assume a tour to follow, it isn’t a stretch to think that John Darnielle and crew would make an appearance at Bonnaroo.

Jack White in some form or other
It seems like these days Jack White is everywhere. From his “main band” The White Stripes, to rockers The Raconteurs, to his new band Dead Weather, to his collaborations with everyone from The Edge to Loretta Lynn, White sure does get around. That’s a very good thing for fans of Bonnaroo. White has made a couple of appearances at Bonnaroo, once with The White Stripes and once with The Raconteurs in what is considered by many to be one of the highlights of the 2008 festival. So it’s always a safe bet to assume some incarnation of a Jack White band will make its way to Bonnaroo on any given year. Dead Weather seems the most likely, considering they are the newest act and the one that has never played Bonnaroo, but any would be a welcome sight for most Bonnaroo fanatics if the message boards are any indication. At the very least, you can virtually guarantee that White’s movie, It Might Get Loud, will be making an appearance in the Cinema Tent for 2010.

Who do you most want to see at Bonnaroo in 2010? Let me know in the comment section.

I would love to see The Dead, Neil Young or Bob Dylan. I know they have played before but I've never seen The Dead (never came to Minnesota last tour) or Neil Young (charges too much) and I've seen Dylan half a dozen times but never at a festival. I was hoping to hit up Rothbury last year but ran out of funds. I wouldn't mind seeing Phish again. I didn't get into their music until after Bonnaroo last year. Middle of the lineup, I'd like to see Jack White in some form. He was one of the highlights of 2008 (and 07). Monsters of Folk would be good. I really want Bonnaroo to bring back Alejandro Escovedo. I missed him to go see Jimmy Buffet. I saw him last week but it was an acoustic show which was okay but I would like to see him with his full band. Los Lonely Boys would be great too. I wasn't a fan until I saw them last week with Alejandro. Amazing! Anyways, this comment is turning into an article. I'm just so excited about Bonnaroo 2010 - my 4th year!

The Dead (though it will never happen)...but Tiesto might and that would rock!!!

Sad news...We saw Bob Dylan at Rothbury and it was not good. I'm the biggest fan and not only did he not play my boyfriends and my song, he unfortunately has lost his ability to sing. It's just speaking. It's nice of course because its Bob but...it's not what you'd expect. But at least he tried!

I bet you'll see Death Cab for Cutie, Keane, Phoenix, and/or Arcade Fire this year. For a major headliner, AC/DC and U2 will be in the states then.

For my 7th Bonnaroo, i'd love to see: The Arcade Fire and Daft Punk (dying to see both live)

For headliners - maybe we could get David Bowie or Peter Gabriel down to Manchester? or (as a guilty pleasure) Prince

as well as: Deer Tick, Dead Weather, Ghostland Observatory (destroyed Austin City Limits in October, would be great for late night at Roo), Black Joe Lewis, Portugal. The Man, Spoon, Xavier Rudd

I suspect the Roo mainstays back this year will be Jack Johnson, MMJ and the Flaming Lips

Tickets on sale Friday, festival is 198 days away!

I would KILL to see paul simon, RHCP, the foo fighters, outkast, jay-z (which COULD be a slight possibility- i dont know considering how badly the kanye incident went, but he did just release the blueprint 3 and all, so maybe, just maybe- and he did play rothbury a few years ago), mmj again- theyre amazing, DMB, spoon, raphael saadiq- i dunno-i'm going regardless of who's playing... i just cant wait til june!!!

  • Chris 2 years ago

for headliners, I mean my morning jacket would be great to see again but i'm really hoping for pavement, the cure, dinosaur jr., or animal collective. I know it's unlikely that ac will come back but heres hoping.

I'm also really wanting to see yeasayer, the dirty projectors, the xx, phoenix, jj, neon indian, baroness, the magnetic fields, black dice, dethklok, dj /rupture, ponytail, surfer blood, small black, sleigh bells, the antlers, bear in heaven, atlas sound, deerhunter, major lazer, girls, wild beasts, bibio, grizzly bear, woods, fever ray, dan deacon, cymbals eat guitars, antony and the johnsons. so many. hope at least some are there.

and a late night tent featuring Insane Clown Posse, Marylin Manson, and GWAR

  • Pixel Dream 2 years ago

Why bother with Girl Talk? Once you have seen him once, that is all you need since the 4 shows I've seen have been the exact same. I love a good dance party, but at least switch it up from time to time. I would rather see Pretty Lights and MGMT again. That was badass.

My dream would be: Ween, Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree, Explosions in the Sky, DoMakeSayThink, Phish, Rush, Arcade Fire, David Bowie, Devo (don't judge them solely based on Whip It...they were way ahead of their time), Eat Static and Lotus.

    A girl can dream, right?

FOR my 7th Bonnaroo too, howdy Shimmy, there is nothing like it, would like to see the mainstays, Deathcab, Jack Johnson, Widespread, My Morning Jacket, etc.,

a nice add would be Coldplay one night(thought the police were too snobby and unbonnaroo.............think the stones would be the same way)the Dead of course, Phish would be nice-they started it, Black-eyed Peas and trust the Bonnaroo gang for the rest. Best concert in the land.............and if you can do VIP, NO SEARCHING, WORTH THE TICKET..............

    Vanilla Ice
    Bel Biv Devoe
    Boyz II Men
    Rascal Flats
    Michael Buble
    Adam Lambert

    Get EM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ron 2 years ago

    @CATHERINE
Sorry, but The Rolling Stones would not play Bonnaroo unless they were the headliner and were paid a whole bunch of money-dvd rights-all kinds of stuff.

The last festival they played was the Isle of Wright and before that I think the last festival they played was 40+ years ago.

They can make a few million bucks playing a baseball stadium in LA, they don't really need Bonnaroo.

I would like to see Death Cab, Jack White in some form (hopefully with Meg), Trey Anastasio with Phish if not just Trey, the guys from the Dead, The Wallflowers, Them Crooked Vultures, Jack Johnson, The KILLERS, Vampire Weekend, Wilco, Moe., Kanye West, of course I would love to the Rolling Stones or even Keith Richards perform-but the odds are bad, Paul McCartney would be sick, Counting Crows, Jay-Z.....

  • Michael 2 years ago

Ghostland Observatory played the roo in 08 too

  • Rich 2 years ago

I want to see Radiohead headline. Any chance this happens? Also, I want to see TV on the Radio there, as well as The Black Keys. Them Crooked Vultures would be a good supergroup to see headline. Modest Mouse would also be a good top tier band to see.

  • J 2 years ago

I would like to see a dope band on Thursday night; Possibly, Dead Weather or Them Crooked Vultures. These bands have the fan draw but not main stage power yet. OUTKAST for friday night would blow my F'n mind! Saturdays headliner has to be either The Stones or The Who. Then close it on Sunday with The Dead.

I believe Jay-z and The Strokes are out of the question because they will be doing the Isle of Wight that weekend in Scottland.

simon and garkfunkle? maybe. they are playing at the new orleans jazz and heritage festival. and they are touring for the first time in like 20 years. i say dead weather for sure. it would be amazing to see my morning jacket play again. but no new album...and the only show they have lined up this year, is the no jazz and heritage too. they usually have a dj set...i say deadmau5. but they had tiesto, girltalk, crystal castles and paul oakenfold the last few years....
id say for the electric area

    infected mushroom
    mstrkraft
    justice
    sebastian

no one has said muse! they are amazing and have a new cd out...tour dates with u2 revolve around bonnaroo 2010.
