Moran fur labeling legislation passes Senate

In a press release available at his website, Congressman James P. Moran (VA-08) announced that H.R. 2480, the “Truth in Fur Labeling Act”, passed the Senate and now awaits the President’s signature.

The legislation, which passed the House in July, seeks to close a 60 year old loophole in current law requiring the labeling of all clothing products that contain real animal fur.

For decades, the law on the books had a loophole in which businesses did not have to label clothing items containing real animal fur that were priced below $150.

“Most people would be outraged to learn that their favorite hat or pair of gloves was lined, not with faux fur, but with the fur of their favorite companion animal,” said Congressman Moran.

“My bill applies the current common sense labeling standards to the estimated 13 percent of the fur market that falls beneath the $150 threshold. Finally, consumers will get the truth about the composition of their fur and faux fur items,” said Moran.

The “Truth in Fur Labeling Act” gained strong bipartisan support, with 170 cosponsors including Democrat Congressman Gerry Connolly (VA-11) and Republican Congressman Frank Wolf (VA-10).

It passed in the House by unanimous voice vote and in the Senate without amendment by unanimous consent. On Thursday December 9th it was officially presented to President Barack Obama.

Among those approving of its success are the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Legislative Fund.

"We applaud the U.S. Senate and House for passing this common-sense legislation and we urge President Obama to quickly sign it into law," says the HSUS on its website.

For Congressman Moran, this is one more victory in his many efforts to advance legislation against all forms of animal cruelty.

In addition to H.R. 2480, Moran has worked on legislation banning animal crush videos and as with the “Truth in Fur Labeling Act” he has legislation pending President Obama’s signature.

The Prevention of Interstate Commerce in Animal Crush Videos Act of 2010 was written up in response to a Supreme Court ruling which struck down legislation on animal crush videos.

Moran believes that the newer revised legislation will remove any constitutional concerns while at the same time effectively going after retailers of videos depicting the torture and killing of animals.
