An out-of-this-world beer – literally – has been crafted by Delaware-based brewing company Dogfish Head. The brewery’s latest creation, in honor of the fall equinox, is a beer made with lunar meteorites that have been crushed into dust, reports MSN Now on Oct. 6. The beer is called "Celest-jewel-ale."
Dogfish.com explains the process:
“These certified moon jewels are made up primarily of minerals and salts, helping the yeast-induced fermentation process and lending this traditional German style a subtle but complex earthiness. (Or is it mooniness?)”
Dogfish says they were in contact with a company that makes space suits for NASA, and were able to obtain the lunar rocks after NASA agreed to install a tap on the latest space shuttle. (OK – that last part was embellished; they did receive their rocks from the space suit company however.)
What does the beer taste like? A “doughy malt, toasted bread, subtle caramel and a light herbal bitterness,” says Dogfish. Not sure if any of that yumminess is derived from the lunar rock, but based on that description, it would seem like the moon tastes delicious. And you all thought it was made of cheese...
Unfortunately, for the majority of us, we will have to experience this beer vicariously through our friends in Delaware, since the beer is served exclusively at Dogfish Head’s Rehoboth Beach brewpub.
