Moon Day

In 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon for the very first time.  He took "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" and this quote is now known around the world.  It was a historic moment as the very first person walked on the moon.  July 20th is Moon Day because people need to remember this extraordinary and significant event.
Sometimes younger kids now days do not know the whole story about this awesome feat.  One good movie that can be watched is "Apollo 13" because it shows what kinds of things happened and it talks about history.  It teaches its viewers about history.

Many kids like arts and crafts so this can be incorporated into this holiday as well.  They can create a moon and star collage, bake cookies in the shapes of moons and stars, or even make a mobile with these shapes as well.  Let the imaginations run wild!  Parents can teach their kids about the moon and how the space shuttle reached the moon while these activities are being done.

In 2011, July 20th will not be a full moon, but it should be very large for everyone to see.  If it is not cloudy, those who appreciate this special moment should sit outside and look at the moon.  Realize the accomplishments that have been made and have some fun even by finding the 'face in the moon.'

Sometimes people take the moon for granted because it's always been there.  One can only imagine though how far astronauts had to travel and what they went through to finally reach the surface.  Tears and laughter were all shed and it was a starting point for technology and space travel to explode.  The universe is an endless possibility and we've only just begun to explore it.  Take a moment tonight to remember the start of this amazing journey that will only progress far into the future.
