You wouldn't think that that making reggae sound jazzy would work, but it does when it's Monty Alexander who does it. He caresses the keys and draws out the soulfully jazzy side of reggae.
Monty Alexander will be at the Howard Theatre tonight, June 13, 2014 and will share the stage with Tony Rebel, Bob Andy, Duane Stephenson, Etienne Charles and Wayne Escoffery. He started out playing the piano at the tender age of 6 and was soon exploring jazz piano at age 14.
Alexander has played with jazz greats like Milt Jackson, Ernest Ranglin, Ed Thigpen and performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Jimmy Griffin and Frank Morgan. He formed a reggae group in the 1990's and released several reggae albums with them.
An ode to his beloved Jamaica, this concert will bring together his two loves--jazz and reggae in one beautiful marriage of mellow jazz punctuated by the undulating pulse of reggae. To learn more about him and his music, visit his official website and become a fan on Facebook.
