Delta resident Clay Goldberg and his wife Shannon Neil speak French, German and Spanish between them. While they lived in Glenwood Springs, the couple enjoyed meeting regularly with a local language conversation group. On Tuesday, January 24, in the Centennial Meeting Room of the Montrose City Hall, 433 S. 1st Street, they are holding an introductory meeting for anyone interested in forming a similar group or groups in this area. According to Mr. Goldberg, this first meeting will be to assess the level of interest in the community and make plans for future get-togethers. He said that the German word for such a group is stammtisch, which refers to those tables in bars and coffee houses reserved for locals only.
The couple make practical use of their language skills during their frequent travels. Last year they traveled from Alaska to Asia, with many stops in between. Next year's goal is a stay in the South American country of Ecuador. Mr. Goldberg is presently working to learn Mandarin Chinese. He recommended the website My Personal Language Tutor as being very helpful in his studies.
Anyone wishing to bring the benefits of informal language conversation practice to this area is encouraged to come to the meeting. For more information, contact Mr. Goldberg by email or by calling 970.901.2917.
