The residents of Montgomery County are especially lucky for the services provided by our own Montgomery County Humane Society, in Rockville, Maryland. The staff and volunteers are a constant source of pride and gratitude for their undying dedication to the homeless, abused, and neglected animals that arrive daily at the shelter. In 2010, 9000 animals were processed by MCHS. (Out of those 9000, approx. 1/3 were wildlife!)
As a direct result of the efforts of the MCHS, 3000 adoptable animals found new homes; and an additional 1200, mostly dogs, were reunited with their families. Those are remarable numbers! But here's another amazing statistic: 80 - 90% of the dogs that arrive at the shelter are Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes. I don't know about you, but I was very surprised at the staggering number of pits and pit mixes that the shelter receives.
Because of the overwhelming number of adoptable animals that the MCHS processes annually, they have set up their own Rescue Program that is managed by shelter employees and volunteers. When the shelter is inundated with a particular breed, it often turns to local rescue organizations for assistance. This is particularly the case with Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes. Right now, the shelter is handling 94 dogs (the capacity is 80).
If you are considering adopting a dog anytime soon, won't you please think about one of these Beautiful, Adoptable, Ladies?
