From the high mountains of Colorado, Montanya Oro Rum is a fine example of the growing trend of mirco-distilled spirits in the Unites States.

Karen and Brice Hoskin opened their Empire Street distillery in SIlverton, Colorado in 2008.
The couple believes their unique location is an asset. High altitude maturing in Stranahan Whiskey barrels produces a profile of spirit unlike those stored at sea level. The temperature variances of cool nights and hot days is said to expand and contract the spirit, enhancing the interation with the wooden barrels in which they age for four to six weeks at about 9,300 feet elevation.
After maturing, this gold rum is enhanced by a touch of caramelized honey from Honeyville Honey Farm of Durango at the time of bottling. Each bottle is inspected and labeled by hand.
The result is Montanya Oro, a light bodied straw colored gold rum that is surprisingly smooth with a hint of sweetness that virtually eliminates any bite in the aftertaste.
Montanya Oro won a SIlver Award in the RumXP International Tasting Competition at Miami Rum Renaissance Festival.
The company also produces a white rum labeled Platino which won a Best In Class Gold Award.
Both are available regionally in Colorado and Illinois with distribution slowly expanding into more states.
