One of the opening SCVAL high school football games of the 2013 season pitted the Monta Vista Matadors against the Overfelt Royals Friday night at Monta Vista high school in Cupertino.
With senior Ryan Manley at quarterback, Monta Vista took a commanding 28-0 lead by halftime and head coach Jeff Mueller’s undermanned Matadors never looked back, winning 42-14.
“It was a great team effort. Our offensive and defensive lines were outstanding controlling the line of scrimmage which enabled us to get out running game going,” Mueller said.
“We only have 30 players so we need these games,” Mueller added.
Possibly one of the top runners in the league, workhorse Monta Vista Senior running back, Justin Cena had 221 yards on 24 carries and scored four touchdowns.
“Overfelt is an improved program with pretty good speed. Thanks to an accurate scouting report, we practiced all week for what they showed tonight,” Mueller said.
“I felt uneasy before the game with it being our opener. We’ll have to get back to work this week, especially on special teams.”
“It‘s always good to get the first win under your belt.”
Monta Vista (1-0) will play Sequoia in Redwood City next Friday and Overfelt (0-1) will host Los Altos.
