Hot fashion models, drag queens, live piercings, blood smearing, fashion, beatboxing and the premier of one hot new band...yep, that about sums it up. Not your average Launchpad show for sure, but if you were there on the only Friday the thirteenth of this year, you no doubt found something to catch your attention.
Craft Punk Vol. 3, presented by Evolution Piercing, was an eclectic show held to benefit the OFFCenter Community Arts Project, a community artspace located in downtown Albuquerque available for anyone in the community to make and buy art.
The fashion show featured designs by The Designer's Lounge, Ammunition, B.E.L., My Heart's Debacle, Hillbilly Rasquache, Hotel NM, Nikki Zabicki, Crystal Celeste, Skulldigger, Cozy Rozy, Vanguard Studio, OFFCenter, Electric Nomad, and Kristen Koffman. Evolution Piercing also performed a live piercing on a beautiful model, attaching black feathers to her back by piercing them through her skin. Yes, that's right, needles with long, black feathers attached to them were woven into and then back out of the skin on the model's back. I didn't see her flinch once. To top it off, the feathers were all promptly removed within minutes after the painstaking work was complete, leaving blood streaming down the model's back. Like I said, not your average Launchpad show.
And of course, there was music. DJ Brandangerous, Saywut?!, and Boxcar Strainsun all added great performances to the show, but the highlight of the night was the triumphant premier of Monster Paws. Oh, Monster Paws, how I love you!
The show marked the first ever public performance by Nate Santa Maria and Isaac Kappy of Monster Paws (with a guest appearance by Mario Rivera), who after releasing a few songs online already had a crowd of enthusiastic fans singing their lyrics and bouncing to their music. Their music video for Champagne Bike Ride is nothing short of amazing, and if you haven't seen it yet, give it a look now. These guys are the real deal, and local music fans should definitely check them out. You won't be sorry. (Remember, you heard it here first.)
I heard a rumor at the show that a Monster Paws CD release party is in the works, so keep your eyes peeled here for more info. You won't want to miss it.
