Monster Madness looks at forgotten monsters from the early days of gaming, when creativity ran rampant, game balance was an afterthought, and critters with little rhyme or reason plagued dungeons for the sole purpose of brutally murdering adventurers. Today's Monster Madness is the Tin Foil Monster, from The Dungeoneer Compendium by Mark Norton.
We've all been there: it's dinner time and everyone wants to keep gaming, but they want to eat too. While the group tries to figure out what to order, there's one guy who doesn't want anything because he brought his own food.
This player, always the largest of the bunch, brings a cooler-full of food. Chips, cookies, sandwiches, pasta…he will sit there and slowly chew half-eaten dinners in front of everyone else while the hungry group tries to scrape together a few bucks for pizza. He chews slowly and loudly. And he never, ever shares.
Watching this guy eat can make you lose five pounds. So what better revenge--when he leaves his half-eaten sandwich out on the table grid between your rust monster and your iron golem miniatures--to have his dinner fight back? That's why God (and Mark Norton) made Tin Foil Monsters.
The simple description describes Tin Foil Monsters as being a lot like a Gelatinous Cube, and if you think about it, the similarities are apt. If anything, the Gelatinous Cube is less ooze-like than the Tin Foil Monster…why would a formless ooze maintain its cube-like shape? Tin Foil Monsters, on the other hand, are just malleable enough to be ooze-like.
But really, it's all about the irony (and the IRON-y, get it?).
- Sandwich the jerk wouldn't share: five bucks.
- Pizza he wouldn't contribute to: ten bucks.
- The expression on his face when the discarded remains of his leftover dinner eats his character? Priceless.

It cannot make a slam attack during a round in which it engulfs. The tin foil ooze merely has to move over the opponents, affecting as many as it can cover. Opponents can make opportunity attacks against the tin foil ooze, but if they do so they are not entitled to a saving throw. Those who do not attempt opportunity attacks must succeed at a Reflex save (DC 13) or be engulfed; on a success, they are pushed back or aside (opponent's choice) as the tin foil ooze moves forward. Engulfed creatures are considered to be grappled and trapped within its body. Blindsight (Ex): An ooze's entire body is a primitive sensory organ that can ascertain prey by scent and vibration within 60 feet. Ooze: Immune to mind-influencing effects, poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, and polymorphing. Not subject to critical hits. Rust Vulnerability: A tin foil ooze is affected normally by rust attacks, such as that of a rust monster or a rusting grasp spell. |
