Monster Madness looks at forgotten monsters from the early days of gaming, when creativity ran rampant, game balance was an afterthought, and critters with little rhyme or reason plagued dungeons for the sole purpose of brutally murdering adventurers. Today's Monster Madness is the Glitch, as reported by Don Turnbull in White Dwarf #4.
Some monsters are useless, some monsters are there to just screw you over, and then there are monsters that are useless, there to screw you over, and aren't ashamed to advertise it. When the game master can't come up with anything else, he just calls it what it is. And that's the Glitch – it's pretty much there to completely ruin your day.
What's a Glitch, you ask? As its name implies, a Glitch effs up rolls in spectacular fashion. Since it's such a one-note monster, it has no other redeeming features. Literally, none: no arms, no legs, no eyes, no mouth. It's a ball of fur. Or in other words, it's a tribble that causes you bad luck.
And just in case adventurers get wise to the fact that the one-inch diameter dust bunny in the corner is causing them grief, it teleports away when anyone attacks it. You've got to wonder why someone would put this into the monster description – is it really such a bad thing that the stupid Glitch dies? Maybe they multiply (like tribbles!). Surely it's not that hard to replace them. Do we really need to have the GM's pet Glitch escape, so it can teleport back whenever it wants at any time to screw up the players' day? Why not just stab your players in the face with a pencil over and over!
Incidentally, we can only assume that the Glitch does all this for its own amusement, because:
This goes on until either the melee moves away or the Glitch gets fed up and wanders off.
See that? The Glitch gets FED UP with your stupid antics and finally decides to move on to something more entertaining. Because to add insult to injury, the Glitch doesn't just cause you to fumble, it actually thinks you're boring too.
