Monsanto is speaking out about the recent rumors that they're working on genetically engineered marijuana.
I wrote recently about speculation regarding Monsanto and whether they had plans to create GMO marijuana.
Monsanto spokeswoman Charla Lord contacted me to say that the company is not presently working on creating genetically engineered marijuana or cannabis.
You are correct when writing that headlines “sounding the alarm…appear to be speculation without sources”.
She went on to say:
The best I can tell is the rumor started with the Chicago Now blog you cited (Is Monsanto Ready to Enter the Medial Marijuana War?) and the line “moving into medical marijuana may seem a logical next step”.
Lord says that so far, none of those speculating have asked Monsanto directly about the issue and that the company is not currently working to create GMO marijuana.
As I noted previously, others are already at work creating genetically modified marijuana. There are already hundreds of patent applications for technology-related marijuana, including a cannabis sativa genetic modification technique from the University of Central Florida and many plans by private companies. Whether Monsanto stays out of the marijuana arena remains to be seen.
