The Monroe County Animal Control shelter is overcrowded again, with dogs scheduled to be euthanized Tuesday, Feb. 7 to make room.
That does not have to happen! The adoption fee is only $30, and the shelter has many healthy, friendly, adoptable dogs waiting for homes. Several puppies are available, along with adult dogs of almost every size, color and type, including a couple of adorable Australian shepherd mixes, beagles and basset hound mixes. Most of the "laundry basket babies" are still there, too.
If you can't adopt but want to help, consider fostering one of these dogs for a local rescue. While adoptions go through Save A Pet, other rescues also pull from MCAC and may be willing to take one of the dogs into their rescue and let you foster it. Fosters are required to give love, a safe place to live and that's all - the rescue pays for food, vetting and whatever else the dog needs.
Some dogs are not housebroken and some may not know how to behave in a civilized manner or walk on a leash, yet. If you have patience and a kind manner, you can easily solve these problems and help a dog have a wonderful future.
Visit the shelter at 157 L. Cary Bittick Drive in Forsyth, or call 994-7976. The shelter's administrator will be out until Tuesday morning.
"I would prefer it at all possible for people to wait until Tuesday to adopt," she said.
An Animal Control Officer will be available unless he's on a call if you want to visit with the dogs and pick one out to adopt on Tuesday. He can handle adoptions but the process will be easier if you come Tuesday to formally adopt. Telephone the shelter before visiting, to make sure someone is there to introduce you to the dogs.

Adopt a pet and save two lives - the one you take home, and the life of a dog that would have been killed due to overcrowding!
