Monopoly game makeover means it’s the year of the cat (VIDEO)

It’s the end of an era: Hasbro has announced the identity of the Monopoly game token that will be replaced. According to CNN , on Feb. 6 the toy giant revealed that the iron token-- a piece of the game since 1930 — would be replaced with a cat-shaped token.

Last month, Monopoly fans were invited to vote for their least favorite retro tokens, as well as choose what token they’d like to see as a replacement. The iron was the loser in this game.

New token options included a guitar, a diamond ring, a helicopter and a robot, but it was the cat that garnered the most votes, with a whopping 31 percent of the take.

The Monopoly Twitter page was flooded with reaction to the news, but for those who are miffed that their replacement favorite didn’t make the cut, a limited edition version of the game will be available featuring all five of the new gold tokens. You can check it out here.

On "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, guest Josh Groban said of the soon-to-be-retired iron token: "It had a good run."

The new version of the Monopoly game (or should we call it Meowopoly?) makes its debut later this year.
