Monopoly fans vote for purring victory to kick iron off board (Video)

This year began with a month of voting on Facebook for the most popular of original pieces versus the most popular new piece Monopoly should add to their famous board game. The final votes were tallied on Tuesday, Feb. 7 by Hasbro showing the public's love for their animals proving to be the winner.

Hasbro presented the contest to Monopoly fans in 185 countries and organizations worldwide.

Monopoly's "Save Your Token" campaign allowed the worldwide fans to have a say in what classic piece was to be replaced with a new piece chosen from a list of five modern figurines that speak of today's lifestyles. The beloved game of Monopoly has a history that began in 1935 and was originally designed to model Atlantic City, a large tourist spot well before the city was reincarnated as a gambling destination. Since, it has continued to grow in popularity in counties around the world with their own versions of the game with streets named for their particular country's famous locations.

Animals are still the winners in people's hearts.

The people have spoken showing admiration for their kitty friends. The cat won 31 percent of the vote, purring its way into the hearts of admirers bypassing the robot, guitar, helicopter and even a girl's best friend, the diamond ring. Humans proved their love for animals as well in the vote for the classic pieces. The well adored Scottie dog stole almost as many votes as the cat, winning with 29 percent of the votes. With only 8 percent of the vote the iron will be pressed out of service and formally retired with the cat stepping in to take its place.

Soon the new Monopoly game will be in stores for a new generation to enjoy.

Get the original game while it is still available on the store shelves. The new Monopoly version with the cat is due to be on available sometime later in 2013. Monopoly will be sure to be a favorite game for many generations to come.
