September is just a stone's throw away and Monmouth Park is heading down the stretch toward the finish line, so to speak. The excitement is mounting as the Oceanport, New Jersey track announced today, August 27, 2014, the current standings of horse trainers, jockeys and horse owners of this year's racing meet. With only a month of horse racing left at Monmouth some very familiar faces are jockeying for position to grab the top honors.
Paco Lopez is in the running for top jockey this season and has ridden home 109 winners out of 368 starts through last Sunday’s card amassing nearly $3 million in earnings. Lopez, a 28-year-old native of Veracruz, Mexico, was top rider at Monmouth in 2010 and 2013. Back in August of 2012 Paco Lopez reached an important milestone in his career when he won his one-thousandth race at Monmouth Park according to America's Best Racing.
Orlando Bocachica, with 43 wins out of 245 starts, is currently in second place. He has amassed nearly $1.25 million in earnings. Bocachica was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico and immigrated to the U.S. in 2000 according to TrackSide View.
Just a horse-whisker away from second place is multiple-graded-stakes winning jockey Gabriel Saez with 40 wins out of 262 starts and over $1.25 million so far in earnings. Saez was born in Port Darien, Panama and began his riding career in his native country in 2004. He was riding at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida prior to the Monmouth 2014 season.
Trevor McCarthy and Eddie Castro are tied for fourth with 36 victories. In the fifth slot is Abel Castellano, Jr. with 25 wins followed by Angel Serpa with 20 first place finishes to date.
Top Horse Trainers
In the trainer category so far this season Jorge Navarro is in the lead with 28 victories and over $607,000 in earnings.
Next in line is Edward Plesa, Jr. who has 27 victories and over $900,000 in earnings.
David Jacobson is third with 22 wins, two more than Todd Pletcher, who has two more than Hugh McMahon.
White Wabbit Wacing LLC has visited the winner’s circle 16 times, eight more than Red Oak Stable and Patricia Generazio.
Three-year-old colt Lucky Rascal is the leading horse at Monmouth Park so far this year with five starts including three first place finishes, a second place finish and $49,590 in earnings. The dark bay colt is by the sire Discreet Cat out of a mare named Irish Shilling and is owned by Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa.
Right behind Lucky Rascal is a bay colt named Hampton Bays Sun who has also had 5 starts including 3 first-place finishes and a second place finish and $38,240 in earnings. Hampton Bays Sun is a six-year-old by the sire During out of a mare named Halo Sun. Other horses of note to date include Pantera, Scatter Joy, Majestic River, Love That Kelly and Purely Boy.
There is plenty of time to head down to Monmouth Park to watch some live racing this Labor Day weekend and during the month of September as the track shifts to a two-day week schedule with live cards on Saturdays and Sundays from September 6 through the end of the meet on September 28.
