New York
-- Where is the money for the Ground Zero mosque coming from?

Those who criticize the building of the mosque/Islamic center near Ground Zero have connected the proposal everyone from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran to the Muslim Brotherhood.

But Park51 as the Ground Zero mosque is named actually has fewer than $9,000 in the bank, says newser.com

And that $9,000 for the mosque at ground zero was raised with the help of a group of Muslim-American moms, says Asra Q. Nomani and there are actually only a few dozen donors.

Many of those donors are people who live close to the Ground Zero site, which had once been where the World Trade Center stood before the 9/11 attacks.

But to build the mosque at ground zero entails around $100 million so the project has a long way to go before it is realized.

Meantime the debate between the two sides goes on about the Ground Zero mosque. Some say it is a way to "give peace a chance", other says it is highly insensitive to the families of the people who died.

I personally believe it is insensitive to build a mosque at Ground Zero but then I don't live in New York City.

There was a Greek Orthodox Church that stood near Ground Zero before the towers went down and which was also destroyed on 9/11. It applied to be allowed to rebuild but was denied a building permit from the city of New York. Is there a double standard here?

Unfortunately, there is a double standard and insensitive to different views. Real issue here has nothing to do with religion. This is a case of common sense and decency as people, regardless of culture and background. Yet, a group is making a big issue on religion. Sad.

groundlessly connecting the millions of muslim americans (not to mention the billion worldwide, some of which our military is supposedly protecting with their lives) to fanatics is dangerous and so well timed to drum up fanatical supporters of right wing politicians.
it very well may not be bigotry that is making right wing politicians scare their constituents about minorities taking over the country, but it's hard to pretend they aren't banking on it helping them get elected.
i'm all for throwing out the corrupt politicians- democrats and republicans- and starting over. but this is a distraction from the real bad guys. they're scapegoating minorities and poor people while politicians and corporations get away with murder.
