Dear Governor Herbert,
We can meet the state’s energy needs if we invest wisely in solar, wind and geothermal technologies.
You have the incredible opportunity to make a difference for the future of Utah. Right now, you can push the state to move into renewable energy resources before it becomes imperative.
Instead of focusing on tar sands and coal – reserves that will be used up within 30 years – we can focus on those energy sources that will never be used up.
By focusing on solar, wind and geothermal, the state will gain jobs in those sectors. The economy will move forward as people begin to save money on their power bills and have more to spend on home improvements or other sectors that have been neglected during the downturn.
But it is up to you to start the revolution. Encouragement and voluntary cooperation isn’t enough to reduce air pollution. Solar panels take a real step in that direction.
Sego Lily school is a good example of what can be accomplished as they move to become a net-zero school. They have used their array of solar panels to provide a covered parking area. There are several apartment complexes that could do the same thing.
It is time to start thinking beyond the oil barrel and to pull our heads out of the tar sands. We need to take more aggressive action and invest in solar and wind technologies so that the future will be able to enjoy Utah’s breath-taking scenery, in a good way.
Sincerely,
Shad Engkilterra
