Monday, August 19, Golden Boy Promotions will put on a boxing card at the Best Buy Theater in New York City, which will be televised on Fox Sports 1. The main event will feature Brooklyn's Danny Jacob's (25-1) vs. Giovanni Lorenzo (32-5) for a vacant WBC Continental Americas middleweight title.
For Jacobs, the bout is an opportunity for him to continue his upward momentum since his return to the ring from bone cancer. Golden Boy has certainly brought him along gradually and Lorenzo will serve as a test in regards to where Jacobs is at this point in his career.
On the other hand, Lorenzo needs a victory in order to stay within the rankings as a title contender. With losses in all 3 of his title opportunities, Lorenzo is on a short leash when it comes to being on the championship stage. Therefore, it is imperative that he come out with a victory if he wants any shot at being considered a notable contender.
In the co- feature, Eddie Gomez (14-0) will look to continue his undefeated streak when he takes on Steve Upsher Chambers (24-2-1). Gomez is a highly regarded prospect that is signed with Golden Boy and is being brought along in order to put him in the position to contend for a junior middleweight title.
Chambers, on the other hand, is coming off a loss to Luis Collazo (32-5) and needs a victory to regain the momentum he had prior to the loss. If not, he will fall deeper into the "challengers" column and will continue to serve as a test for the "A" side fighters of the boxing world.
In further action, Emanuel Gonzalez (11-0) will take on Michael Doyle (2-3) in a super featherweight match up. Interestingly, the undefeated Gonzalez has not fought for a year, which will lead many spectators to look for any ring rust.
Conversely, Doyle is coming off an upset knockout victory over Neuky Santelises (5-1) and will be entering the fight with just 6 days of rest. However, Doyle's knockout came in the first round, which should leave him with plenty of energy for the upcoming match up.
In addition. New York fight fans will have the opportunity to view Gary Beriguette (1-0) take on Kamal Muhammad (0-1). Beriguette is being moved along by New Legend and W.O.N Promotions as a prospect within the junior middleweight division and it should be interesting to see how he performs in his second appearance as a professional.
In the end, the boxing card put on by Golden Boy Promotions should be a fan friendly encounter for New York fight fans. Some of New York's highly regarded prospects within the New York fight market will have the opportunity to further their claim as one of boxing's best.
