As family historians we enjoy recording the lives of our ancestors. In addition to making known the vital statistics of their lives we search to fill out the details of their experiences. By recording our memories we are helping future generations fill in those same details about our own experiences. Photographs share these experiences in ways that many other things can’t. Perfect for a gift or home décor item, a photo timeline is a simple way to share a personalized heirloom that your family will enjoy for years to come. Record your family memories in a flash!
First, choose your subject. Consider events in your life that you would like your family to remember. Is there a sledding hill that your children enjoyed over the years? Do you attend Ohio State University football games each year?
Next, gather your materials. You’ll need the following:
- Photos of the same holiday over the years
- A multi-photo frame with mat
- Acid-free notecard and envelope
- Acid-free archival-quality pen
After you’ve gathered your photos, scan and print copies of each image. Arrange them chronologically in a way that is pleasing for you and fitting for your chosen frame. Using the acid-free pen, write the year of the event on the photo mat. Be sure to place it in a location that will be convenient for others to see. Use the notecard to record stories and memories related to the photographs. You might consider adding the names of the relatives in the photos or the locations where the celebration took place. By attaching this notecard to the rear of the frame you are ensuring that generations to come will connect the stories with the photographs. Images such as Christmas trees, holiday meals, or weddings throughout the years are wonderful events to highlight through a memory project. Use your creativity and record your family memories!
