As I walked into Purgatory at the Masquerade on Saturday, October 10, I suddenly felt as though I had walked into a 1950s roadhouse. There was rockabilly music playing, people dancing, and everyone looked amazing in their 50s-inspired outfits. It was my first time at Mon Cherie's Rockabilly Lounge, and I could tell it was going to be an interesting night.
Like promised, I was greeted by a beautiful pin-up beauty as she handed me a delicious free Jello shot. On the stage, Rod Hadmallah and band were tearing it up as a lovely hula hoop dancer joined in on the performance.
Syrens of the South featured several amazing burlesque performers, and they also threw in a magic show by a handsome vampire magician for the ladies! Hostess for Syrens of the South Katherine Lashe was also a pleasure to watch. Her mix of humor, allure, and sarcasm resembled the lounge lizards of the past, but she brought the style back to life.
My favorite performance throughout the night was Renea' LeRoux. She did burlesque as the Queen of Hearts, in a beautiful costume she designed herself. Not only is the buxom beauty nice to look at, but she gives these coy and almost evil glances that really add to her performance. She's definitely one to look out for!
Vendors also added to the fun of the event. The ever-so-talented Damon Mace of Aries Chain Mail was there, showing off his work and selling pieces of his wearable art. The Syrens of the South were also selling a variety of products like sexy pin-up pictures and corsets.
Hostess Mon Cherie, when she wasn't acting as DJ, did a great job of mingling and making everyone feel welcome. While there, we talked about her two events, Club Fetish and Rockabilly Lounge, and how she is able to produce two very distinct events.
She explained that rockabilly is like the new punk rock scene, and of course the original goth movement branched off from punk. She also mentioned several bands that she considers to both be goth and rockabilly, including The Cramps, Horrorpops, and Nekromantics. Certainly a lot of aesthetic and themes overlap between the two styles of music and indeed the cultures.
Although Rockabilly Lounge isn't what I would normally call my scene, I loved it and will definitely be back! The music was upbeat, the crowd was new to me but very friendly, and overall it was a fun and laid-back night.
The next Rockabilly Lounge will take place on Friday, November 27. More details to follow!
