Part one of Moms that stick together are also FIT together highlighted Lanaya from Raising Reagan, below the interview continues with her good friend Koren Beard from My Full Time Fit Life. Keep reading to learn more about Koren and how you don't have to actually give birth to a child to go through the ups and downs of weight gain during motherhood.
How many kids do you have?
I am a step mom to two teenage boys, ages 13 and 14. My fiance has full custody of both boys and they are with us 100% of the time. They keep us super busy between school projects, birthdays and sports!
Was it hard to lose the baby weight after giving birth?
I didn't give birth to them but there was some weight gain as I was around the boys more. Kids have different taste buds than adults and the more I was around the kids the more I was around those tasty treats kids love! ie: chips, cookie dough, pizza, candy, sugary cereals and the list goes on! I have to admit at first it was especially hard because it had been so long since I was around so much of that type of food and as a kid sweet cereal meant Raisin Bran but Randy and I learned to help each other make better decisions and practice our will power. Over time we have begun to make lots of healthy swaps which is good for the whole family! Once we made those swaps keeping my weight in the normal range was easy. I still allow myself to indulge now and then as it's the best way to avoid that late night binge!
Did you workout while you were pregnant?
I plan to when the time comes! I'm thinking lots of yoga, resistance bands and of course running till the doc makes me stop! Is it weird that I thought it was cool when that woman crossed the finish line of a marathon and went into labor? I fear both child birth and running a marathon, so why not? Not this one coming up but in the future, why not?!
How do you balance time with your girlfriends and being a mom?
Personal time is crucial to keeping your sanity! Whether it's time alone with my fiance, getting my hair done or visiting with the ladies I make sure to set time aside for myself by planning ahead! I schedule everything from workouts to dinners during the week. It is the best way to prioritize and ensure that you get what's important to you done. And especially during the school year when sports and homework come into the picture I have to plan! We have 2 calendars in our kitchen and I carry my old school day runner with me, I have to write everything down!
What is your must have healthy snack in your purse?
My go to snack is pistachios! I actually hate nuts except for peanuts (and now pistachios!) however, Randy got me to try pistachios recently and he has created a monster! I love these salty little treats! They are one of the lowest calorie, lowest fat and highest fiber nuts (only 160 cal a serving!) and they are also a prebiotic. We hear so much about probiotics but prebiotics are important too. Prebiotics differ from probiotics in that pre's are a "soluble fiber" meaning that your gut can break them down, compared to pro's which are "insoluble fiber" which your gut does not break down, helping to move things along. Prebiotics are just as important though, as they keep the flora bacteria in your gut healthy and ready for digestion. So in essence they are like a prep agent, preparing your stomach for healthy and efficient digestion. They are also packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals!
What is your favorite form of fitness?
I love to run. It is a great way to clear my head and get a full body work out. Running, and aerobic exercise, has always proven to be the most efficient way for me to loose weight. My fiance and I are currently training to run our first marathon together and it is a great way for he and I to spend time together. Every few days we get a chance to get outside and spend time alone together. I love pushing my body and mind through the challenges of long distance running and I especially love experiencing it with him, it is so great for "us!" I am also a huge fan of weight lifting which is an amazing stress reliever as well as fat burner. Weight lifting is a form of anaerobic training, which is not only a great compliment to aerobic training, but it is the most efficient way to trim fat as your body continues to burn fat for hours after your work out. More bang for your buck!
What is your number one tip for new mommies looking for a healthy balance?
Plan, plan, plan! Randy and I have a schedule for everything! From our weekly menu, to when we are running and for how long to which days we are lifting weights, down to each muscle group! It is imperative to staying on track and ensuring that we get out there! Also, remember to involve the kiddos! We have a whiteboard in our garage where our home gym is set up and Randy and I record our work outs and progress. By adding the boys to the board it keeps them involved so that they don't feel left out and it keeps them competing with each other to stay active and healthy!
Get to know Koren:
My fiancé, Randy and I live in Sacramento with his two amazing teenage sons, Mason and Canon. I am a bookkeeper and front desk coordinator at a salon and day spa which allows me to have time with my family and to stay fit!
I have always had a fascination for health and fitness and I have always loved to cook. I began my fitness mission in high school; taking both weight training and Jazzercise as electives for three years. I recently began to really expand my love of cooking into an exploration of nutrition and training. I am currently enrolled in ISSA's Personal Training and Fitness Nutrition Certification Courses.
Last December I was inspired by my best friend, Lanaya Cooper of www.raising-reagan.com, to start a blog and My Full Time Fit Life was born. My blog began with a focus on balancing a career and fitness and over this last year it has shifted it's focus to balancing much more than that. Now my blog focuses on what's really important to me; family, fitness and nutrition. My Full Time Fit Life has healthy recipes, training tips and nutrition info, it follows my step-parenting wins and fails and beauty explorations.
I met Lanaya when I went to work at Enterprise Rent-a-Car right after college. She was my manager and were instantly friends. We both weathered the ups and downs of our Enterprise careers and stayed close even after our career paths parted. I was a bridesmaid in Lanaya and Brian's wedding and met my niece Reagan just hours after she was born in Philly. Being apart of these events means everything to me, they are my family. Lanaya is that friend that knows what I'm thinking before I do. She is the closest thing I have ever had to a big sister, even though I have two! She really inspires me to reach outside my comfort zone and keeps me focused.
We also happen to share a love for sports, although, Lanaya is a San Francisco fan and I am an Oakland fan, but we both live for our baseball and football seasons! I think it might be the food... But she is the reason I am a blogger and for that I am thankful!
