Fort Fisher Aquarium, located at Kure Beach, is one of three aquariums in North Carolina. Open 362 days a year, the aquariums’ goal is to promote awareness and appreciation of the state’s aquatic and terrestrial environment. Through live exhibits and daily activities, visitors to the aquarium can learn more about the waters of the Cape Fear, as well as about the plants and animals that inhabit our local waters and marshes. An albino alligator, numerous sharks, eels, loggerhead sea turtles, seahorses, and stingrays are just a few of the animals you will encounter on your visit to the aquarium.
In addition to daily activities, such as animal feedings, diver demonstrations, and animal encounters, the aquarium also offers numerous special events throughout the year to attract visitors of all ages. On Saturday, January 28, the aquarium will host a “Mommy and Me” day for toddlers age 1 to 2 and their mommies. The program starts at 9 a.m. and lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Mommies and their toddlers will be led through the aquarium by a trained member of the aquarium staff, who will point out the various exhibit highlights in a manner that toddlers can understand and appreciate. In order to maintain the attention of the young children, the guide will move quickly and will focus on qualities such as the bright colors, size, etc, of exhibits. After the aquarium tour the mommy and toddler duos are invited to story time, followed by independent play in the Freshwater Wonders Room, which will be reserved for program participants. Once the program has ended families are welcome to stay and continue to visit the aquarium at their leisure. The cost is $4.50 for members, $13 for nonmember mommy/toddler pairs, and $1 for each additional child.
