Mom & tot review: 'Frankenweenie' on 3D Blu-ray & other formats now

Black and white in 3D in my house - if the 1950s could see us now!

But in all seriousness, Tim Burton's black and white Frankenweenie adventure is available now on 3D blu-ray and all other formats. We watched Frankenweenie in the theatres in regular format but received a preview copy from the studio to check out the 3D bluray version on our new 3D TV last weekend. 3D and black and white seem retro at first thought but really work for this movie. I couldn't imagine it in color, the sweetness might get lost in what could seem gross.

My youngest daughter became an instant Frankenweenie fan after we saw it at the theater. She was so excited when her beloved movie - her fav of 2012 - arrived at our house. She normally gets scared of things in movies and admits that there are some kinda frightening things in Frankenweenie, yet she still loves it. I admire the work of art crafted in the stop-motion animated film directed by Tim Burton. It has a good script and plot line. The premise is sad - a beloved dog dying - though he does come back to life. I also really liked the message of the importance of science and the speech the science teacher gives to the crowd of angry parents. I liked that the lead character was smart and clever. But I would have liked him to have more friends. I don't know why the smart, science-loving characters in movies can't be the cool kid. I realize that this was part of the plot and it worked, but I'm just saying it would be nice.

Frankenweenie is nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and others for best animated film of 2012.

Seeing this in 3D at our house is just awesome. Granted we're relatively new to the home 3D theater world (just getting our setting up Black Friday week). Plus the bonus features onth e bluray are cool - like the featurette on bringing minatures to life and the bonus shorts. But still, this is sure to be a classic the kids will request and enjoy every Halloween, at least... or if you're like my 5 year old daughter, all of the time! We consider this a must have... and hope to see Frankenweenie as part of the Jack Skellington features at Disneyland next time we go!
