Mom shot to death, missing 4-year-old found safe, husband charged

MOUNT PLEASANT, Michigan (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) -- Authorities in Mount Pleasant say the Amber Alert issued for missing 4-year-old Brody Fish was canceled after a weekend search led police to the boy and sadly, to his mother’s dead body. They arrested his father who was charged with open murder.

Stephanie Fish, 34, and Brody were last seen Friday night. When the Amber Alert was issued police said the boy was “believed to be in extreme danger” and thought to have been abducted by his father, Jason Lantz Fish, 35.

The sheriff’s office described Brody’s situation as being “in the company of another with intent to harm the child or who has confirmed criminal history of harming children, sexual assault, domestic assault, or is suicidal.”

Brody’s Mother also appeared to be missing according to her mother, Denise Gates, saying her daughter had not been seen since Friday night too. Gates said she didn’t think Stephanie was with Jason. She also said she doesn’t think Jason would harm Brody.

It is believed the episode began as an argument between the parents on Friday in their home on N. Rolland Rd. in Sherman Township, also called Weidman, near Lake Isabella, which is about half-way between Mecosta and Mt. Pleasant.

At 4:55 p.m. Sunday the sheriff’s office said a cellphone belonging to Jason Lantz Fish was pinged in the Grand Rapids area. Fish was pulled over in Genessee County.

Police processed a .22 caliber rifle as evidence. The Michigan State Crime Lab is assisting in the investigation, WSBT reports.

Initial reports were of a missing child. It was announced at 6 p.m. Sunday that Stephanie, too, was missing. Brody is safe and staying with a family member.
