A mom shoots an intruder five times, and he collapses after leaving the scene of the crime, according to information made available on Jan. 4, 2013. This brave mother had two children at home, twins, when she observed a man knocking frantically at her front door and ringing her doorbell. She phoned her husband at work about the incident, and he advised her to hide with the children. That's exactly what she did, according to AJC.com.
The woman, whose name has not been released, hid in an attic closet with her nine-year-old twins while the intruder entered her home. In the meantime, her husband called 911 from work. When the man found the family's hiding place, he also discovered a .38 pistol aimed at his face.
She fired her weapon six times, but only five bullets struck her target. After the mom shot the intruder five times, she told him not to move as he lay crying on the floor, and she brought her kids to a neighbor's house. The man fled after the gun-toting mother left the house.
Fortunately for the alleged intruder, his gunshot wounds were not fatal. However, they did stop him from making a clean getaway. As he attempted to drive away from the scene, he collapsed. Police found him bleeding in a neighbor's driveway. When police arrived, he begged them to help him. The suspect has been identified as Paul Ali Slater.
This isn't the first time that a mom shot an intruder to protect her family.
An 18-year-old widow named Sarah McKinley killed a man named Justin Martin in self defense after he and an accomplice broke into her Oklahoma home one year ago. The teen mom was alone in the house with her infant son when she heard the two men trying to enter the home. McKinley blockaded the door with a couch, gave her baby a bottle, and phoned 911 for advice from the relative safety of her bedroom. Unbeknownst to the intruders, she had a loaded rifle and a pistol by her side.
McKinley asked a 911 operator whether she could shoot the intruders. McKinley was told not to shoot until the men actually entered her home, then " . . .you do what you have to do to protect your baby." McKinley fired one shot from the rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, in the direction of the intruders. It struck Martin and killed him; he was later pronounced dead at the scene. The brave young mom was not charged in the incident.
Despite the bravery of the mom who shot an intruder five times, some people say she shouldn't have been armed in the first place. Is this a perfect example of the importance of the second amendment or an example of why more gun control is needed in this country? Your comments are welcome.
