When a Loganville, Ga. mother heard someone knocking at her door, she told her two 9-year old twins who were downstairs playing, "don't answer." At first she didn't think anything was out of the ordinary until the knocks turned into a constant ringing of her doorbell, reported AJC on Jan. 4. She then proceeded to call her husband who was at work. He told her,.
“Get the kids and hide.”
Her husband then called the police while his wife gathered the children and went to a crawlspace to hide. However, the perpetrator had started to force his way into the home with a crowbar, said authorities. After looking around the house, he then worked his way to the exact space where the woman and her kids were hiding, but to his surprise a .38 revolver was pointed at his face.
Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman said,
“He opens the closet door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a .38 revolver.”
Out of the six bullets the woman fired, five hit their mark, which was right in the face and neck area of the suspect. Incredibly, the man remained conscious but in obvious pain. The woman threatened the man that more bullets were to come if he didn't stay down, however, she had fired all available rounds from the revolver.
The bleeding Paul Slater obeyed her orders as the woman and her children hastily made their way downstairs and to a neighbor's house.
The severely injured man eventually got up and fled in his car before the police were able to get to the scene. But for obvious reasons he didn't get very far. Police found the man bleeding uncontrollably in a neighbor's driveway while saying the words,
“I’m dying. Help me.”
Slater was transported to a hospital in Gwinnett County and is expected to survive, the sheriff reported.
Authorities later found out that Slater has a lengthy arrest record with numerous charges including simple battery.
Donnie Herman, husband of the brave woman, told media sources,
“My wife’s a hero. She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do.”
The woman's actions even impressed Sheriff Chapman, who later said,
“That mother’s instinct kicked in. You go after a mother’s kids and she’ll find herself capable of doing things she never thought she was capable of.”
