Five years and counting. That’s how long it’s been since Jacquelyn Byers has used shampoo on her hair. In an interview with Huffington Post Live posted on January 15, Byers revealed that she just said no to shampoo after becoming concerned with the amount of chemicals added to popular brands.
A blog post explains the young mom’s reasoning: “If you wouldn't be comfortable drinking it, why would you be comfortable slathering it all over your head and then rinsing it down your body?”
Byers has a point. With ingredient lists that boast chemicals such as paraben, phthalates and petroleum by products, most shampoos require a chemistry degree to decipher them. Byers says she tried the expensive, organic route, but was put off by the ingredient lists that were as lengthy and complicated as cheap generic shampoos. Next up, a baking soda and apple cider regimen, but she didn’t like how it made her hair look.
So what did she do?
How about nothing? Byers stopped using product altogether, opting to just rinse her hair a couple of times a week in the shower. She says she combs her hair now and then and gets a trim once a year, but no shampoo (or soda or cider) touches her locks. She also claims her hair is healthier than ever, citing an adjustment period of a few months: “If that seems long,” she writes, “think about how long you've forced your hair to "adjust" to all those chemicals in your shampoo. Think about it.”
On the January 15 episode of “The Today Show,” co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford gave their two cents on Byers’ no-shampoo stance. While Kotb admitted she’s once gone seven days without washing her hair, Gifford made a big stink about it.
“I’m not trying to put the lady down, but after two days a head starts to smell to me,” the “Today” host said.
