Laura Miller (Bonnie Somerville) is a stay-at-home mom who feels taken for granted by her husband Michael ((James Tupper) and children. Michael is a realtor who is always conducting business on his cell-phone. Her 17 year old son Brandon (Ian Belcher) and 12 year old daughter Ella (Kaitlin Bernard) are absorbed in their own lives and activities.
On Mother's Day weekend, Laura is invited to spend the weekend at a posh resort with her BFF Trish (Ona Grauer), a successful architect who is working on a project. Laura indulges in the lavish trip and the luxurious offerings at the resort. When she sits in on a business meeting with Trish and wealthy client Don (Kevin McNulty), she makes suggestions. It turns out that Laura has unfulfilled career aspirations because she trained as an architect before becoming a wife and mother.
Back at home, Michael and the children realize that keeping the household running smoothly takes time and talent. They clean the house and Michael asks Laura to come home, but Laura is enjoying an amazing weekend and is not willing to cut it short.
Laura sees that Trish has a fulfulling career and glamourous lifestyle and wonders about pursuing a career. Laura lrealizes that living her dreams won’t bring true happiness unless her family is along for the adventure.
Trish envies Laura's loving family and her appreciation for her boyfriend Jason (Toby Levins) deepens. Trish begins to realize her jet-setting lifestyle may not be as fulfilling as settling down with the love of her life.
