A mother and her ex-boyfriend were arrested Friday for the murder of a 17-month-old girl who they allegedly claimed fell down the stairs at a home in Cherokee County.
Ms. Jamie Beck, 23, of Bartow County, and Mr. Michael Naples, 31, of Woodstock, were charged with felony murder and first-degree child cruelty after an 11-month investigation, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began on Oct. 14 when deputies responded to the home at 304 Red Bird Way after getting a report of an injured child.
They found Kaylee Rayne Johnson unresponsive, the sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said.
The mother told deputies she got up to get a glass of water and noticed the door to the basement was open.
“She then stated she saw her daughter lying on the ground at the bottom of the stairs,” Lt. Baker said.
Kaylee was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she died two days later as a result of her injuries.
Later the GBI Crime lab results came back listing the cause of the infant’s death as “blunt force trauma to the head” and the manner of death as “homicide”.
“It was determined that the injuries to the child were not indicative of those of a child falling down stairs,” he said.
Both suspects remained in the Cherokee County jail Friday without bond.
