Mom charged with child abuse for leaving kids home alone

Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged a 31-year-old Detroit woman Saturday with child abuse for leaving her two children at home alone during an apparent burglary.

Deedra Pitts is expected to be arraigned this weekend on two counts of fourth degree child abuse. Worthy’s spokeswoman Maria Miller said she didn’t know whether Pitts had a lawyer.

The drama started at about 5:00 a.m. Thursday, April fourth.

Pitts’ 10-year-old son woke up to find several items missing, including a 60” TV. The boy’s mother was also missing.
The boy called 911, grabbed his 10-month-old sister and sought the help of a neighbor

Police arrived at the house in the 9300 block of Pinehurst and found it empty.

Police put the kids in a squad car and drove them to the nearest police station. Later, the father came to pick them up.

Pitts arrived at about 9:00 a,m, She told police she had left the children in the care of her sister, but her sister was not around.
