A mom bites off a pit bull ear to save her daughter? Yes, and this strange news story actually happened A Texas mom bites off a pit bull ear to save her 2-year-old daughter from being mauled, and it demonstrates the power of love and sacrifice. Chelsi Camp and her daughter, Mackenzi Plass, are both lucky to be alive in the near-fatal dog attack and the story of their survival is nothing short of a miracle, citing a post the NYDailyNews wrote on April 23.

The pit bull attack took place back in March, but the story is now going viral, with good reason. It's more on how the mom and daughter survived than it is on why the animal targeted the toddler.

Chelsi and Mackenzi were dog-sitting a friend's pit bull terrier at South Shore Apartments in Alvin when the dog approached her daughter while they played in the backyard, according to a KHOU report. At some point, it became "curious" of the child and suddenly attacked her.

Camp rushed to her daughter and tried to compel the dog to release her head from its mouth. And despite punching the dog and even forcing her fist down its mouth, the animal continued its attack. It was not until the mom bit off the pit bull's ear in an effort to save her daughter that the animal relented. Later, emergency responders say baby Mackenzi was perhaps seconds from death.

The dog came up and he was just curious. When he smelled her, that's when you saw it flip because I think he smelled my dog on her," said Camp on why she thinks the canine mauled her daughter.

A month after the dog's attack, Camp and her daughter are recovering well. In fact, Chelsi, who sustained bite wounds on both her hands, is back at work. Meanwhile, Mackenzi is coping well and preparing to have her sutures removed this week. However, it will be a year before doctors say the child can be outside in direct sunlight. Sadly, the animal was put down.

One would think that after a mother bites the ear off of a pit bull to rescue her daughter, she would think differently about dogs in general or harbor ill feelings. However, the brave mom doesn't blame the dog and continues to be an animal lover.

Camp points to her daughter's strength, and suggests that she was meant to "be here."
