It’s a fairly straightforward recipe, so it’s surprising just how may bakeries get it wrong; but not Molly’s. The Lincoln Park bakery has the red velvet cupcake down pat. So perfect, in fact, that Chicago Magazine dubbed it the best—and the cheapest—in the city.
For only $2, customers can devour the moist, chocolatey cake and its smooth-as-butter cream-cheese crown. And while velour may reign supreme for many a cupcake eater, customers can also design their very own cakes, without calling ahead.
Step up to the counter and choose from any one of five classic cake flavors (chocolate, vanilla, carrot, banana, and the aforementioned king) for the friendly staff to top with just as many types of frosting, such as vanilla, brown butter, or French buttercream.
Because we're often in extra-gluttonous mood, we usually ask for candy toppings (gummy bears, Reese's, etc), before making it rain at the self-serve sprinkle station. However, what really steals our sugar-coated heart is the center-filled creations. The shop makes a dozen or so varieties, each of which puts the beloved Hostess cupcake (R.I.P.) to shame. We personally love the butterscotch caramel, but mixed berry is a close runner up.
Molly's Cupcakes is located at 2536 N. Clark Street. The shop, named for the owner's third-grade teacher, donates a portion of its profits to local schools.
